{"id":512,"date":"2015-08-17T14:43:19","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T06:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/?p=512"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:43:19","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T06:43:19","slug":"two-piles-of-five","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/?p=512","title":{"rendered":"two piles of five"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEEK\u00a0 THIRTY-TWO \u2013 (august 10-16)<br \/>\n<strong>The first pile of five&#8230;.<\/strong><br \/>\ncontains books I bought on my last trip to Melbourne (WEEK TWENTY-FOUR).<br \/>\nI only allowed myself the luxury of perusing two bookstores.<br \/>\nThe first was my favourite, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillofcontentbookshop.com\/\">THE HILL OF CONTENT<\/a>, where I found four must-haves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-521\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy-1024x1000.jpg\" alt=\"pile of five copy\" width=\"600\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy-1024x1000.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy-300x293.jpg 300w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy-600x586.jpg 600w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pile-of-five-copy.jpg 1711w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/juliepaterson.com.au\/product\/clothbound\/\">ClothBound <\/a>by Julie Patterson was devoured on the homeward journey.<br \/>\nI have always valued Julie&#8217;s work and I celebrate it&#8217;s longevity and recognition.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m half way through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/240436\/stories-of-art-and-artists-by-edited-by-diana-secker-tesdell\/\">Stories of Art &amp; Artists<\/a> &#8211; a beautiful little hardcopy compendium of short stories. Generally I find short stories unsatisfying, not so these. I delicately devour them in short bursts and find they leave me feeling satiated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publish.csiro.au\/pid\/6628.htm\">Upside Down World<\/a> was read over many breakfasts. It contains words and pictures recorded by early visitors to Australia as they tried to make sense of our odd wildlife.<br \/>\nOf course it features &#8216;Rara Avis&#8217; (rare bird) &#8211; our black swans.<\/p>\n<p>The other &#8216;swan&#8217; book in the pile &#8211; The Thing with Feathers &#8211; will go onto another pile to be read&#8230;whenever.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth book, another that I am still delving into further day-by-day, over breakfast and coffee<em>&#8230;..and sometimes with fresh lemon slice<\/em>.<br \/>\n<em>I\u00a0 actually searched for<\/em> this book at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngv.vic.gov.au\/\">NGV <\/a>after I saw the John Wolseley exhibition.<br \/>\nI hoped it into existence.<br \/>\nThe <em>really essential<\/em> component of this photo is the pencil&#8230;I am underlining and writing in the margins yet again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-520\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy-1024x749.jpg\" alt=\"john, coffee &amp; cake copy\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy-1024x749.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy-300x219.jpg 300w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy-600x439.jpg 600w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-coffee-cake-copy.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I probably saw the exhibition about three times\u2026round and round&#8230; then a quick exit to grab a sketchbook so I could empty my brain in readiness for a refill&#8230;. before going around again.<br \/>\nIf I am in this excited mode of viewing I need to capture my thoughts so that I can then move on to looking at the work in other ways.<br \/>\nI can only do this when I am on my own.<br \/>\nI took photos in the fourth round as, to me, that is a <em>different<\/em> form of looking.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I don\u2019t consider that I am a landscape\/ big view person but this work is big, expansive, little and micro.<br \/>\nHis thinking seems to work like that too.<br \/>\nThe works contain a myriad of styles and marks.<br \/>\nIt is not precious in the making &#8211; it can&#8217;t be with all that torn paper, glue, spoldges, imperfections and intuitive mark marking &#8211; all pieced together to make it a much more <em>precious work of the moment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-531\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"john wolseley detail\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail-600x800.jpg 600w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/john-wolseley-detail.jpg 1361w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I loved the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BcFx5TX49e8\">short film<\/a> of him working\u2026wallowing in mud and printing with \u2018organic matter\u2019 on the edge of the dam. I watched it twice, lapping up the ease he has with his environment, materials and body.<br \/>\nWhat absolute, enviable freedom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The second pile of five&#8230;.<\/strong><br \/>\nwas purchased on a visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paraquadwa.asn.au\/\">PARA QUAD<\/a> op shop\/book shop in Shenton Park.<br \/>\nA-MAZe-ing!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-523\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"second five books\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books-600x600.jpg 600w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/second-five-books.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only book bought to read, \u201cLittle House on the Prairie&#8221;, was quickly demolished and I now understand the love for the book.<br \/>\nWhen I recently read \u2018Little House in the Big Woods&#8221; I was underwhelmed.<br \/>\nNow I realise where the love comes from. Beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>The four other books have old photos that interest me and they have been added to the inspiration pile and duly photographed. I am very eager to play with the swan related photos in one of them\u00a0 &#8211; either by manipulating them digitally or printing them out and then reworking the images.<\/p>\n<p>I did want\/desperately need a stitch binge this week but the reality was I was that I was in no way set up for it &#8211; organizational duties meant a week of research and emails out\/in\/out.<\/p>\n<p>In between the emails I kept myself<em> sort-of-sane<\/em> by working through boxes of collected old napery and textile bits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-524\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes-1022x1024.jpg\" alt=\"doiley boxes\" width=\"600\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes-1022x1024.jpg 1022w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doiley-boxes-600x601.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They needed to be sorted through, to search for embroidery details for proposed works &#8211; I only want details in specific colours at the moment but the sort still produced a very large pile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-519\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"doiley pile 11\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11-600x800.jpg 600w, http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/doily-pile-11.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That large pile needed to be ironed then photographed &#8211; both a full shot and a detail.<br \/>\n<em>I may<\/em> use only the photos of the needlework.<br \/>\n<em>I may<\/em> cut some pieces out from the items\u2026not sure&#8230;. BUT I did quickly photograph <em>many.<\/em> A total of 401 images on the first day and 322 on the second.<br \/>\nThese were full shots and many details.<\/p>\n<p>Why so many photos?<br \/>\nThese photos are my insurance policy.<br \/>\nI use them, manipulated often only in size and colour, then print them on paper or fabric as needed.<br \/>\nI am also getting close to the day when I will cut the bulk of these textiles gems and make something\u2026 a functional quilt, or more artworks?<\/p>\n<p>There will be some left in the boxes, the family ones if nothing else. I find it a bit sad that nowadays I rarely use the cloths and napery\u2026they just don\u2019t suit my life or my decor like they used to.
