{"id":2464,"date":"2017-05-15T21:28:58","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T13:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/?p=2464"},"modified":"2017-05-15T21:28:58","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T13:28:58","slug":"its-grand-to-be-in-budapest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/?p=2464","title":{"rendered":"it&#8217;s grand to be in budapest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEEK SEVENTEEN (april 24-30)<\/p>\n<p>From a week full of visual overload, and camera overuse, this post features photos from Budapest&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museum.hu\/museum\/62\/Museum_of_Ethnography\">Museum of Ethnography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a perfect first day full day in Budapest. The bloke and I started this trip with the commitment not to be &#8216;good&#8217; &#8216;tick box&#8217; tourists but to see only one museum\/gallery\/major site per day. Most of the crew are staying at the hotel that <em>supposedly<\/em> The Grand Budapest Hotel movie was based on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danubiushotels.com\/en\/our-hotels-budapest\/danubius-hotel-gellert\">The Gellert.<\/a> We meet there most nights for a drink and have a meal <em>somewhere<\/em> but go our own way during the day.<br \/>\nOf course the reason to go to Budapest for this occasion was because our &#8216;oscar&#8217; that year, which we re-named a <em>Leon<\/em>, was that lovely farce of a movie.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2479\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"3264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4.jpg 2448w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-4-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2448px) 100vw, 2448px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our first Museum pick, the Museum of Ethnography was a winner.<br \/>\nIn a grand old building, we launched ourselves though the ground floor&#8217;s temporary exhibition &#8211; <em>shoes of the world through the ages. <\/em>Fascinating.<em><br \/>\n<\/em> Then the enormous upstairs permanent &#8216;cultural history of Hungary&#8217; kept us entranced through to the very last item.<br \/>\nFrom clothes and crafts to traditions and trousseaus, the exhibits were captivating and extensive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2480\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5.jpg 2448w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-5-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2448px) 100vw, 2448px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We got lucky with the perfect first lunch too.<br \/>\nWith no Hungarian words flying from our tongues we hesitatingly put our heads inside a local restaurant, and were given the last table. The temporary exhibition here was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imm.hu\/en\/exhibits\/view\/400,In+the+Mood+for+Colours?type=temporary\">In the Mood for Colours <\/a>&#8211; a theme which beautifully presented coloured works from their collection.<br \/>\nOn entry we were &#8216;scanned&#8217; to work out our colour profile and then linked to one of the items in the exhibition.<br \/>\nI was equal in hue to the <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.imm.hu\/gyujtemeny\/footed-cup-with-grinded-decoration\/14046\">footed cup<\/a> with &#8216;grinded&#8217; decoration.<br \/>\nFor a rare change I had on a smattering of red amongst my usual black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2482\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7.jpg 2448w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-7-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2448px) 100vw, 2448px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Movie Night was perfectly organised by our President at <em>the most beautiful theatre<\/em> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urania-nf.hu\/gallery\">The Urania<\/a>. We saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urania-nf.hu\/film\/_1945\">1945<\/a>. With a nine p.m start, and a group dinner under our belts, some of us lost our way despite the English subtitles.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sure it wasn&#8217;t the wine, merely a day of walking, exploring and totally full noggins?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2483\" src=\"http:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2253\" height=\"2253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8.jpg 2253w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/janmullen.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/week-17-8-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2253px) 100vw, 2253px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another fresh new day of beautiful weather took us up to Buda Hill via the funicular.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/budacastlebudapest.com\/hungarian-national-gallery-buda-castle-district\/\">The Hungarian National Gallery<\/a>, was explored top to bottom with only a small lunch break.<br \/>\nWe were both entranced &#8211; with the exception of a very extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/georg-baselitz-699\">Georg Baselitz<\/a> exhibition.<br \/>\nThe work was fine but we there was way too much of it over a vast maze of a space.<br \/>\nPlenty of his work is presented &#8216;upside-down&#8217; which is impressive <em>for about five works&#8230;.<\/em><br \/>\nThe experience was also daunting, in this large meandering space almost empty of people. We were watched like hawks.<br \/>\nThe &#8216;Prison Guards&#8217; hovered, easily outnumbering the viewers.<\/p>\n<p>We weren&#8217;t allowed to take photos, and that&#8217;s okay, but I wanted to record some info on the didactics <em>&#8211;\u00a0 a list other artists that turned their work upside-down<\/em>.<br \/>\nI recorded the words on my phone instead. How old-fashioned:).<br \/>\nFor your info the other artists are;<br \/>\nCasper David Friedrich,<br \/>\nJohann Wolfgang von Goethe,<br \/>\nMax Beckman,<br \/>\nand Wassily Kandinsky. BUTTONS&#8230;.<br \/>\nIn the war years the castle held prisoners&#8230;prisoners who needed to be productive.<br \/>\nIn explorations\/excavations years later, pieces of bone with holes cut out were found.<br \/>\nThe prisoners were making buttons &#8211; a great use for bone.
